Afghanistan Faces Food Shortages in Wake of Drought, Conflict
Eighty percent of rural families in Afghanistan have less than a month's supply of food. These communities used to make their livings from farming, putting aside provisions to see them through the long, harsh winter. Drought caused crop failure. The global food crisis and the pressures of conflict conspired to drive up food prices 167 percent in the last year, meaning 450,000 households across the country can no longer afford to buy food. ActionAid is on the ground, providing emergency food and water to communities while pushing for changes that will put an end to hunger for good.
Tell George Bush: Urgent US Leadership on Food Crisis is Needed at G8 Summit
In the 2000 UN Millennium Summit, the United States joined world leaders in pledging to halve the number of hungry people by 2015. However, today’s food crisis instead threatens to double the number of people who already experience chronic hunger. Current United States policy on biofuels, climate change, and agricultural development are in part to blame. But bold US action at the July 7-9 G8 Summit could help reverse the rise in food prices. Join ActionAid USA in calling on George Bush to take urgent measures at the Summit to stop the food crisis from spiraling out of control.
