ActionAid is assisting thousands of people left homeless after Typhoon Ketsana hit Vietnam killing nearly 100 with many more missing.

The storm hit Vietnam, as well as Laos and Cambodia on September 29, with winds of up to 84 miles per hour.

Continuous rain, strong winds and flooding has affected a large area forcing 170,000 people to evacuate their homes. Many districts and communes have been isolated for several days, while houses and schools have been damaged and flooded.

Dao Ngoc Ninh, ActionAid Vietnam’s Emergency Coordinator, said thousands of hectares of rice crops were lost.

ActionAid has been assisting with immediate rescue operations and our assessment teams are currently on the ground organising the next phase of the relief operation.

Survivors are in need of dry rations, safe drinking water, candles, matches, kerosene and mosquito nets.

The typhoon follows two earthquakes on the Indonesian island of Sumatra earlier in the week and a tsunami that hit American Samoa on the same day.
