The worst Brazilian floods in two decades have forced more than 300,000 people from their homes, destroyed crops and water supplies, and overwhelmed local hospitals with children suffering from waterborne illnesses.
A rare two-month onslaught of rain fuels the floods, which ActionAid’s partner organization, ASSEMA, believes are exacerbated by climate change and deforestation.
So far, 10 Brazilian states have been devastated by the flooding.
Although the Brazilian government is distributing food to people in need, sewage continues to flow through the streets and illnesses such as diarrhea are spreading, especially among children. Flooding recently even closed the children’s hospital in Pedreiras, forcing all patients to be moved to the town’s only dry hospital which is now caring for twice as many patients as it can handle.
ActionAid is assessing the situation on the ground and is focusing its initial response on one of the hardest-hit towns, Pedreiras, which is in the state of Maranhão that is completely under water. Brazilians impacted by the floods are in immediate need of family kits, medicines and support for doctors and health professionals.
ActionAid’s response will build on a decade of human rights work in Brazil. Still, we need your help. Please join ActionAid as it provides vital aid to children and women in Pedreiras adversely impacted by the flooding.
