While all eyes were on the Olympic games in Beijing, ActionAid remained on the ground in Sichuan province, providing ongoing relief to the estimated 5.7 million people who were displaced and more than 50,000 dead in the wake of the 7.9 earthquake that struck China's Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008. ActionAid continues to get food, water, shelter and medicines to remote areas impacted by the earthquake.

Consider supporting ActionAid's ongoing work to provide support to those most in need.

ActionAid’s placement, partnerships and history working in some of the most rural areas have positioned us to provide relief quickly and effectively. In Gansu and Shanxxi provinces affected by the earthquake, ActionAid was quick to provide some of the most basic necessities.

For example, in Maobah, the primary school was damaged by the earthquake. Twenty tents donated by ActionAid were sent to this school, allowing students to return to school days after the quake. ActionAid provided Yuguan village which was affected seriously by the earthquake with plastic cloths, flour and bowls.

Months after the earthquake, ActionAid continues to be hard at work in affected communities. We wanted to share some of our ongoing efforts and offer you some inside perspective from the diary of an ActionAid relief worker.

We continue to work across remote villages to assess the situation and ensure the urgent needs of villagers are lacking basic necessities are met. As the weather continues to climb, disease has begun to spread and water has become more scare. ActionAid is providing medical supplies and clear water to the affected people.

Two villages surveyed have been destroyed, all 96 households have been moved to safe areas. People are currently living in crowded conditions in tents and makeshift settlements. It is estimated that every household needs approximately $150 (1,000 yuan) to rebuild their home.

Please consider making a contribution to ensure that the people who have been left with nothing, are able to rebuild their own lives after this devastation.

ActionAid began work in China in 2001. By 2008 we have established development areas in 14 counties of 5 provinces. We work with rural people in 186 villages of 40 townships benefiting 150 thousand women, children and farmers in poverty.

ActionAid's relief efforts in China are focused in hard-to-reach, outlying communities. Our community-based partners are working to identify needs and we are getting the medicines, tents, water and other supplies into these hard-hit communities so they can begin rebuilding their lives.
