Supporter Spotlight: Baker Elementary Fundraises For Disaster Response

Students at Baker Elementary School in San Jose, California, organized a campaign to raise awareness about four recent disasters around the world: the floods in Kerala, India, the earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi, Indonesia, the wildfires in California, and Hurricane Michael in Florida.

Ayaan, a fourth grader at Baker Elementary, was inspired after visiting India and seeing ActionAid’s work up-close. He and his classmates decided to sell school supplies to raise money for disaster response – and together they raised $1,600! ActionAid is directing funds to community-led response in India and Indonesia, and partners are directing funds for California and Florida.

Through this project, the kids researched all about how natural disasters work and how these many emergencies around the world relate to our changing climate. They designed posters, passed out flyers, and started conversations in their community to create real change!

These young leaders remind us that we are all connected. From their home state of California to thousands of miles away in Kerala, India, we all have something at stake when it comes to climate justice, and we can all do our part to support each other. Thank you, students!
