One Year After Hurricane Matthew

A year ago today, Haiti was struck by Hurricane Matthew. The devastation was widespread, with many people losing their lives, homes, and livelihoods. Together with our local partners, and with support from our donors, ActionAid was able to respond quickly, providing food, water, and other urgent supplies to the people who needed them most.

When the storms pass, our response doesn’t immediately end. Over the last year, our local teams have worked with communities to restore their livelihoods, replant their farms in ways that make them resilient to future disasters, and train local people how to prevent violence against women and girls.

Hurricane Matthew Response by the Numbers

We have directly reached more than 5,000 people, mostly women, with seeds and farm equipment, cash vouchers that allow them to make ends meet as they rebuild their livelihoods, and women’s rights workshops.

As we continue our long-term work supporting communities in Haiti to be better prepared to face these superstorms, we take this opportunity to celebrate the individuals in Haiti who are rebuilding their communities.
