Climate Talks Continue in Morocco
It’s official. The Paris Agreement went into effect last Friday, three days before the start of the 22nd UN climate change conference (COP22) Marrakech, Morocco. This year’s conference will focus on action items to implement the Paris Agreement, as many parts of the world are “already losing the fight” against climate change.
Adding to existing challenges is the election of Donald Trump to the United States presidency on November 9. Countries say they’d still move forward on the climate deal without the U.S. Meanwhile, concerns that Trump will block progress on climate action fueled protests outside the UN climate talks.
Refugees Use Solar Power to Communicate
There’s hope. Syrian refugees in Greece are tapping into solar power to contact loved ones back home. With the help of Project Elpis, named after the Greek goddess of hope, 3,600 people per month can take advantage of solar-powered charging units and avoid high-risk alternatives such as hacking a light pole.
Haiti Begins Cholera Vaccination Campaign
A cholera vaccination campaign seeks to reach 820,000 people in southern Haiti. There have been 1,200 suspected cases of cholera since Hurricane Matthew hit the region last month.
