ActionAid strongly condemns the radical and anti-democratic attacks that took place in the capital of Brazil, Brasilia, on Sunday, 8 January, with the invasion and depredation of the presidential palace, the National Congress, and the Supreme Court.
Democracy was hard won in Brazil, and the Democratic Rule of Law must be defended and preserved. As an organization present in Brazil for almost 25 years, ActionAid has been active in the struggle for social justice in its various spheres – economic, gender, race, climate, and environmental justice.
ActionAid denounces the unprecedented and unacceptable events in the federal capital. It publicly calls on the authorities to fully investigate these terrorist attacks. Social justice and the development of a country are only possible when democracy and its institutions are fully respected.
