ActionAid USA’s Statement on Citi’s Attempt to Criminalize Peaceful Climate Protests

ActionAid USA condemns Citibank’s recent actions aimed at criminalizing peaceful climate protests organized by the Summer of Heat campaign. Since June 10, thousands of activists have engaged in nonviolent civil disobedience at Citi’s global headquarters, demanding an end to the bank’s financing of fossil fuel projects that exacerbate the climate crisis.

We stand in solidarity with the Summer of Heat campaign activists, who call for accountability and transformative change in addressing the climate emergency. We support the right to peaceful, lawful assembly and free speech and denounce any attempts to suppress these fundamental freedoms.

We urge Citibank to cease these oppressive measures and respect the rights of activists dedicated to nonviolent protest against the funding of the climate-destructive fossil fuel industry. Together, we can drive the necessary changes to protect our planet and secure a sustainable future for all.
