A widely prescribed yet misguided solution to meeting the world’s future food needs is to simply produce more food. Based on a review of recent economic modeling studies by researchers at Tufts University’s Global Development and Environment Institute, this report finds that calls to double food production by 2050 to feed an estimated population of 9 billion are founded on flawed forecasts and misleading characterizations of recent research.
Meanwhile, the impact of climate change and biofuels expansion on future food security and the sustainability of large-scale, fossil fuel-based agriculture is vastly under-explored.
